When it comes to breakfast in Turkey, Menemen reigns supreme as the second most popular egg dish. While you might expect to find something like a “Turkish egg,” it’s Menemen that graces the morning tables. This hearty and flavorful dish is often compared to Greek Shakshuka, as they share many of the same ingredients—tomatoes, peppers, onions, and eggs. The key difference? In the recipe, the eggs are beaten, creating a creamy, rich texture that’s simply irresistible.

But here’s a tip for those who might not be a fan of eggs: you can easily leave them out and still enjoy a delicious, savory dish. Menemen, with its juicy tomatoes and vibrant green peppers, makes for a perfect vegetarian breakfast option that’s both easy to prepare and incredibly satisfying.
If you ever find yourself wandering the charming streets of Turkey, make sure to indulge in a traditional Turkish breakfast. And if you stumble upon a Menemen shop, don’t hesitate—step inside and order a plate. These places specialize in it, and they’ve mastered the art of making it just right.
What’s in a Menemen?
The classic Menemen is made with eggs, tomatoes, green peppers, and onions. Personally, I’m not a fan of onions in this dish, so I like to leave them out. But the beauty of Menemen is its versatility—you can adjust the ingredients to suit your taste.
Cook the peppers and tomatoes, add chili flakes and oregano. Cover with a lid and cook until the tomatoes get soft.
Add feta cheese and eggs, stir well. Add salt and pepper and taste in this moment, add more salt if necessary.
When the eggs cooked, takes almost 3-4 minutes, add mozzarella and cook 2 more minutes to melt.
Menemen vs. Shakshuka: What’s the Difference?
While Menemen and Shakshuka are quite similar, there’s a subtle difference: in Menemen, the eggs are beaten before being added to the pan, while in Shakshuka, they’re usually left whole. This small distinction gives Menemen its signature creamy texture.
Menemen is one of my all-time favorites. Whether I’m enjoying a cozy breakfast with family or hosting guests, it is always on the menu. The combination of juicy tomatoes, sweet peppers, and a generous helping of cheese is perfect with the eggs. And don’t forget to scoop it up with some crusty bread—it’s the best way to enjoy all those delicious flavors. If you like a bit of heat, try adding fresh jalapeño or hot green chili. Trust me, it’s a game-changer!
